I can't even begin to describe what a wonderful book this is. It is definately top 5 for me. The characters in this novel are rich in depth. Emotionally and physically I had a vivid picture in my head about each and every one of them. The pain of a father, a son, an author, a historian (book collector) as well as a lover. Twists and turns pulling you in to every page. Page after page of magnificant words put to paper to tell what I feel is the most gripping story I have read in a long time. This book had no "drag" times for me. It followed a smooth trail from start to finish. Carlos Ruiz can write. Read him!

This book kept me hooked from start to finish. Very well written. Recommended it to family and friends, and they loved it. Can't wait for the subsequent novel from this author to get released in English.

Shadow of the Wind is a book that leaves you breathless. It is a beautiful mix of Gothic darkness and allegorical light. It has mystery, romance, danger and humour in just the right proportions. It is a homage to literature and reading and the magical journey that happens when you open a book that touches your heart and soul. Everything about this novel works ..........the coming of age story of Daniel, the mystery surrounding Carax ,the setting and political history of Barcelona, the amazing characterization of Fermin.etc, etc, etc. Once you have read it, it will linger forever in the shadows of your mind never, ever to disappear into the cemetery of forgotten books. This novel truly cast a giant shadow for me!!!!

It's rare to come across a book as breathtaking and superbly narrated as this one. A novel that makes you wish it were shorter so that you could finish it one read but then makes you yearn for more pages beyond the last, so the story and the spell never ends.

I love this book, read it so fast that by the time I was nearing the end, I had to slow myself down because I didn't want it to end! I have since read it two more times. Love the characters, the plot, the writing.
