I had this book as a child. I think it can be used to teach several lessons to young children. One very important lesson is the importance of choosing the proper pet and controlling the pet population. It can also be used to teach a sense of community/neighborhood, good manners towards older people, and counting. In addition, the little boy in this book has a name that is not very common to boys, so it could also be used to teacher tolerance of differences in name, ethnic origin, disabilities, etc. As a teacher of preschool students, I can see many uses for this book in a classroom.

This was one of my favorite childhood books. The pictures are fantastic and help young children take part in the telling of the story. Adults will love the plot as well. I was thrilled to get a copy of this! Thanks Amazon!
