Editor's Notes and Comments:
Product Description:
Centipede has one hundred feet. One hundred feet means one hundred shoes. How in the world does Centipede choose shoes? This Math Reader clearly demonstrates the concepts of pairs and multiple sets, all in simple, rollicking, rhythmic text and with bright, graphic illustrations.

One Hundred Shoes (Step-Into-Reading, Step 2) One Hundred Shoes (a.k.a. the centipede book, in our home) is GREAT. I bought it as a "math" reader for my kids, ages 5, 6 and 9. They all enjoy it but my 5yr. old son esp. LOVES it. We began reading it just before K5 began and he memorized it w/in two days. Although it's currently beyond his reading level, it has served as a great incentive; he is learning/beginning to actually read the book he loves so much. It does Not touch on "math" aspects as much as expected however my kids love the rhyming and the fantasy of a centipede wearing shoes and wearing different types for different occasions has offered scope to broaden their imagination! They immediately looked up centipedes on the internet to "see" what a real centipede looks like, etc. We read it often as it maintains its appeal :-)

ONE HUNDRED SHOES: A Math Reader
by Charles Ghigna
Random House
This week, Courtney took out 8 books from the library. I believe she took out so many because in school they are only allowed to take out 1 book a week whereas at the public library, there are no limits on how many books a child can take out. I'm reviewing the ones we liked the best very first and One Hundred Shoes is definitely at the top of the list.
All About One Hundred Shoes
One Hundred Shoes is a Step into Reading math reader. It was written by Charles Ghigna and illustrated by Bob Staake. It has a copyright date of 2002 and was published by Random House Children's Books.
According to the very first page of this book, Step into Reading is designed to give every child a successful reading experience with the grade levels assigned to each book to be used as a guide for the parent to determine which book may be most suitable for their child to read.

One Hundred Shoes is a Step 2 book and has an ISBN number# of 0-375-82178-3.
The Story
ONE HUNDRED SHOES is a rhyming story about a centipede and his feet, or rather, what he puts on them. Obviously, if he has a hundred feet he's going to need a lot of shoes and the poem is all about where and how he gets his shoes. Does he buy them in a mall or online? Does he wear slippers, clogs, sneakers, boots, sandals, loafers? Where does he put them all when he sleeps? These are all questions asked in the poem and in the end, the poem states he thinks he knows why the centipede walks around barefoot.
Why We Recommend One Hundred Shoes
One Hundred Shoes was an instant hit for both Courtney and myself. I really liked the educational aspect of it, which is simple but perfect for her grade level:
"Shoes come in pairs. Pairs are so nifty.
Two shoes in each pair, so you will need fifty"
Courtney loves shoes so she immediately took to this book. We both had fun looking at all the different shoes that the centipede was wearing. We pointed out which ones were boots and which ones were slippers and so on. We looked at the different designs and colors on them and just had a fun time reading the story. Another reason why One Hundred Shoes is a winner is because the words are written in large print and are simple. This is another book that Courtney can read all on her own therefore, it's been read many times already.
All in all, One Hundred Shoes is a book that I would most definitely recommend to anyone with small children, especially if they are beginning to read on their own.

I bought this book for my 5 year old and he absolutely loves it. It's one of the few he has actually read over and over again. Some of the early reader books tend to bore him, but he (and I!) find this one very entertaining.
