This book has all the elements of a romantic thriller. The book begins with a courtroom scene of terror and the tension continues through the remainder of the book. Of course we realize that Kate is making decisions which only increase her dilemna, but given the fact that she has a son to protect, there doesn't seem to be any easy answers. In fact, there was a moment or two that I thought she might get away with it all. The ending was a little unbelievable in that after she has fretted over her past and her involvements through the whole book, it is all dismissed in a sentence without any repercussions to her career. However, Tom is the perfect romantic hero. He is strong, handsome, protective and good with children. You have to love him. Kate is vulnerable, but strong. She has worked hard to make a life beyond her past, and she faces situations which would destroy most of us. I liked her. The fact that she makes mistakes makes her more human. If you want a fast-paced romantic thriller, read Guilty by Karen Robards.

I was disappointed by this installment by Karen Robards. I read "Bait" and loved it and "Vanished" and thought it was okay. Kate seems very much like the main character that was in th book "Vanished", but perhaps a little less annoying. Married at 19, no family, has a child, no father around and manages to make it though law school while raising and infant with no family help at all. Also, it doesn't even seem that Kate has any friends.
Tom is a likeable cop that seems to have protective instincts. In general, I liked him as a character, as well as I liked his partner.
The story centers around Kate getting caught in a courtroom hostage situation where she ends up being blackmailed because of her checkered past. Thoughout almost the entire story, she lies to Tom. She does so much, you actually find yourself sympathizing with Tom, not Kate.
The story just went on and on and Kate's chest was always tighning, stomach twisting into knots, etc. Blah Blah Blah. I found the relationship between Kate and Tom so unbelievable since there were so many lies told and it went on for so long. The story seemed to take forever to develop and it just didn't ring true.
The story had lots of potential, but the string of lies was just drawn out for too long and it made it incredibly dull. I saw nothing between Kate and Tom other than a physical attraction.
Joyce Bean reads the audio version of this book and I have to say, she does deliver on that. She's one of my favorite audio readers and didn't disappoint me there.

Kitty Kat who becomes Kate should have been named Scaredy Kat. From the very start of this book through the end, Kate is frightened and the more frightened she becomes the less common sense she seems to show.
In a regular romance book (not romantic suspense) this character would probably make a good heroine. When not frightened she seems to be able to pursue her goals, be a great mother, and keep her life on track. Unfortunately we see very little of that Kate in this book and the hero of the book sees even less. I have absolutely no idea why he would like her. The author says that he thinks she's brave, yet there is absolutely no reason for him to think so. The woman in this book freezes when she should act, and acts stupidly whenever she is frightened. Every time a new crisis occurs I got to imagining the worst way she could behave and that's what she did almost in all cases.
This is shown in even worse light when every other person in the book, including her 9 year old son can think better under pressure than she. The boy says at one point to the hero that it is a relief to have another man help take care of her, and unfortunately he's speaking the truth.

I got to about page 60 and give up. It's almost ALL interior dialogue and boring as hell. If Kat said one more time, "I'm a single mother!!!!" I thought I'd throw up. Did she really think criminals would say, oh, holy mother, sorry, you're fee to go? So she reproduced, big deal. I agree with all the other negative reviews. She was TSTL.

A big disappointment for me. It's the very first book I've read by this author. I was looking for a mystery, instead got a cheap Harlequin romance. Fortunately, it was a library book, so at least I didn't spend any money on the matter. I won't be reading any more of her work!
