This is my all time favorite childrens book! It is so much fun with a twist at the end that the kids (and adults) just love. It is also a good read aloud for a class or group since it's not too long. Fun pics, too!

I decided to check this out from the library before buying it. I'm glad I did. I'm all for women being able to be on their own and all that, but I really did not like this book. It was cute.. but I'm not planning on buying it.
The Paper Bag Princess by Munsch is a much better book and teaches the same sort of lesson. I recommend checking that book out instead.

She kissed him and turned him into a frog. I didn't like that because he did all the things she said, and she didn't like it. People should do what they say they will do. And her pets were monsters, so he could have stayed at the castle.
I liked that she didn't turn the others into frogs. I liked the pictures.

I am the mother of a 4yr old girl who is well beyond her years. I wanted to get some stories that took the female out of the typical helpless role so that she would see that females are not typical nor helpless unless they allow themselves to be. First I got "Paperbag Princess" by Munsch. Excellent read and I thought this would be just as good. Although not as good as Paperbag Princess, still a five star book. I read through other reviews and I understand where someone might see this text as bigotry against men, but honestly I do not believe it to be so. I believe this book is a humoristic way of allowing girls to see that they do not need to be dependent on anyone without being able to depend on themselves first. I read it to my daughter and asked her what she thought before giving my thoughts on it to her and she replied that she thought Princess smartypants was smart because she did what made her happy even though other people were trying to get her to do something differently. (her words) Now granted, if this is read and then the child coached on how "smart she was to stay single and not marry" then yes, the book is being used as a weapon rather than a tool. But this book is a good tool if used as it is meant to be. Nowhere in the book does it ever state that marriage is bad, or wrong or that men are bad or wrong. It simply tells a story of a princess who is content as she is but then is being pushed to do something that she really doesnt feel she needs to do. I suggest it as a reading to all young girls.
