After reading all the wonderful reviews, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. What a disappointment....Half way through I had to force myself to finnish it, and I couldn't help thinking that this was just a spy novel with some romance in it. A romance that I didn't believe in at all!!There was no real chemistry between Annique and Grey. Just the author telling me there was, but I couldn't feel it. At times I was simply bored, wanting to skip pages.I really tried to believe in Annique, that it was possible to act the way she did in her "condition" (won't give away spoilers!)but I couldn't believe in that either.
This book is not unique at all. It's OK, but not a keeper.

Annique is French and works as a spy for the French. Robert Grey is the British head of spies. Leblanc is French military and has captured them both and put them in the same dungeon. I don't want to say any more about the plot because much of the fun was in the surprises. Readers will enjoy this book much better without knowing the plot summary. I will say the plot involves danger, escaping, being on the run, spying, secrets and loyalties. The plot spends more time on the adventure than on romance, but there is some romance and a happy ending. Some parts might be stretching logic a little, but it was a fun and different escape. I also enjoyed the main characters who are admirable, smart and talented.

The title of my review summarizes my view: this was mostly a spy novel rather than romance. The book was loaded with action at some pages and so boring at others that I almost gave up on it once or twice. My main problem was Annique, not as a character but as a spy: We learn that she is a super spy, one of the best of the Game early on. We get glimses of that when she makes her very first escape. But after that, she could be a spy in her very first mission and you wouldn't know the difference. If that was the best spy Napoleon had, no wonder he lost the war! She manages to get caught four times, spills her guts to strangers because she is "refreshingly straightforward" (a must quality for a spy!), is constantly scared or terrified when facing her enemies and is heavily depended on Grey to make her feel safe. It was like reading about two different persons: one is the experienced, dangerous spy as described by the other spies but whom the reader never meets, and the other is the Annique the reader gets to know, a vulnerable young child, who needs protecting from a strong, experienced man (that would be Grey). I am sorry, but after a while, when I read how terrific spy she was, I wanted to throw the book away (I actually did it once). The romance was mediocre, took little space comparing to the action, and didn't hold my interest. Although Adrian seemed interesting enough, I don't think I will make a second try with Ms Bourne.

Beautifully written. An involving start. I enoyed the history.
but there were many times I closed the book in disbelief. Anneque was brilliant, she had a faultless memory. I believed that. But to wander about as she did when blind was too much of a stretch for me. And I could not believe this smart girl would unburden herself to a stranger, no matter how safe he made her feel. My other problem was that she too often came across as a vulnerable child, and that made Grey, in my eyes, a dirty old man.

As a spy novel, this works pretty well: while there were some details that didn't really make sense (Annique was a bit too vulnerable and open for the reputation she supposedly had, though she made up for it in other respects), overall this book presents a fascinating picture of the spy game played between the French and the British. Many of the characterisations are also very good: Annique, in particular, is absolutely delightful and well-drawn, even if she wasn't entirely realistic as a super-spy; Adrian and Doyle were fantastic; and even some of the very minor characters, like Galba and Soulier, were interesting and memorable. The villains were a bit one-note, but that wasn't much of a problem given what was required of them.
As a romance, however, I don't think it works. Grey, the hero, is really not very interesting and doesn't have much of a personality, and Annique's immediate barely-controlled lust for him makes no sense. This is compounded by the fact that they don't really have a lot of chemistry, and the supposed sexual tension is told rather than felt. I actually thought Annique had considerably more chemistry with Adrian, who was also a much more interesting character than Grey. In light of all this, the romance feels pasted-on, and distracts from the more interesting aspects of the story.
All in all, I did quite enjoy this book, despite being rather annoyed with it, and I definitely think this author shows considerable promise, especially as this was her debut. I just think it would have worked better as straight fiction rather than romance. (I do hope she gives Adrian his own book.)
