- Educational Leadership
Special Voices is a book of stories, the stories of children with special needs in a regular fifth grade classroom. It is also the story of how their teacher learned to create a classroom environment that enabled them to overcome many of their problems. Ms. Five describes how students with various learning needs and emotional and behavioral problems became part of, and flourished within, the classroom community instead of working in isolated settings. Readers will become involved in the struggles and successes of learners whom they will easily recognize. They will hear the voices of Angela, a child with learning disabilities; Tomoko and Yasuo, two ESL children; Andrew, a child at risk; and others. Classroom teachers will be inspired by these eight children and their dedicated teacher.
Although Special Voices tells stories of eight children, these students' successes can be generalized and applied to all children. Regular-classroom teachers will find answers to many of their own problems related to special learners. They will discover how they too can include them in their classroom communities.

As a special education teacher, I found the case studies in "special Voices" exciting and educational. It helped me see how the writing workshop of a general education classroom can benefit many different exceptional learners. Each case study traced a child's improvement through one school year and discussed the progression of behavior and academic achievement. Ms. Five's analysis does not isolate each student's writing and reading experiences but instead shows how they evolve within the child's other classroom experiences. She draws the reader into her problem solving and thought processes in addition to illustrating the complex needs of many types of learners. I recommend this book to anyone who teaches the writing process at any level. It helped me understand why some of my current teaching habits are working, but it also pointed out some places where I can foster more independence in my writers.
