Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Confusing
I am in eighth grade, and I read all the time, and usually understand the books that I read.I was assigned Katarina for a world war 2 book report, but i couldn't get into it. Katarina is about 8 or 9 years old, and tells the story of her non practicing Jewish aunt and uncle and self in Slovakia near the beginning of the deportations of the Jews. in this book, one paragraph she is in hiding in an old barn, and the subsequent she is at home painting easter eggs. there is no "remembering" or anything that clues you in to what is really going on,and as soon as you figure it out, she's somewhere else! I can't understand this book, so I did not enjoy it. However, i hope you all make your own decisions on whether to read it or not! you may like it!

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - A true account of a young girl's war experience
Katarina is a red-haired 7 1/2 year old left with her Aunt Lena during the Nazi occupation of her native Slovakia during World War II. She proves to be resourceful and brave when events force her to leave the relative safety of her aunt's home. We see the war through the experiences and eyes of the naive Katarina who becomes confused about her religious identity while hiding in an orphanage. I highly recommend this touching novel to young adults and adults interested in a very first hand account (fictionalized) about the war experience told from the perspective of a young Jewish orphan.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - No Rest for the Weary
This story opens on February 26, 1942 in Slovakia, during the height of WWII. Katarina, 14 lives with her beloved aunt and uncle. They are hiding from the Nazis who have been rounding up Jewish families and sending them to work camps. This family is able to dodge the Nazis for some time prior to devising escape plans.

They return to Slovakia in 1943, believing their home to be safe from impending Nazi attack. Katarina's aunt and uncle tell the girl they are leaving the country for a safe house. Katarina is then packed off to stay with friends whom the aunt and uncle pay for her board and care. Months elapse and the couple receives no pay for Katarina's board and hope for her aunt and uncle coming for her ebb. Forced to leave the home, Katarina romas the country side from one peasant town to another, seeking food and shelter. (Parts of this book call to mind Kozinski's "The Painted Bird.") After months of roaming, Katarina returns to her home village where she is reviled for having blue hair.

Desperate, Katarina beseeches a maid who had worked for her family to help her. Anka, the maid, secures the girl's safety at a Christian rooming house as her aunt and uncle's friends refuse to take her back. Reviled for being Jewish by the other girls, Katarina flees the rooming house. Once again, Katarina roams the countryside, never losing hope that her aunt and uncle will come back for her. She also never loses hope in her faith and the Catholic doctrines which she has learned from Anka.

This is an excellent book about Eastern Europe during the Second World War. I also like the way a pronunciation guide is included at the beginning of the book.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - DMA: Review - Katarina
Katarina is all about the holocaust and the struggles they went through to survive. This book is hard to read. It's one of those books that doesn't have a happy ending. But it is good to read because it gives you information about the topic. I would definitely want you to read this book because it shows how brave they were.

Let me tell you a little about the book. There is a girl named Katarina and she is living in the holocaust years. Her family pretends that she has a fever so her family won't be taken away. After a time only she and her Aunt are left. When her Aunt leaves because she needs to take care of business in another country Katarina is left walking the streets until someone takes her to the orphanage. She spends about four years there. One day she finds out that a police officer is heading back to the where she used to live. They set out together but at one point Katarina decides to continue alone.

This is a good story on a historical topic. It's just not a fun story. I bet you are wondering what happens to Katarina. I won't give away the whole story but I'll provide a preview. She finds the town has changed a lot and she finds her old school teacher. I hope you read this book. I recommend it.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - you cant ignore it
The book Katarina is about a 14-year-old girl that is so happy when her aunt Eva has a baby girl, until... 3 months later Nazi soldiers went to Jewish houses and told them that they are going to be relocated! This book is connected to World War2 because the Jewish are getting killed so the Nazi soldiers can take over Germany in 1942. This book is also a good book to read as a family group activity because it tells about Katarina going to a concentration camp and doesn't even know she is adopted until the end of the war!!!
