I bought this set for my daughter so that we can continue to practice her reading during the summer months. She loves it. It also helps that she is a Clifford fan. She is so excited that she can read to me instead of the other way around. My 4 yr old son likes to look at the books too.

My five-year-old son has been using these for home school reading practice. We bought them because he had been through his curriculum readers and was bored with them, but he wasn't quite ready to just jump into "real" books. They were a bit of a challenge for him at first, but just enough challenge not to be frustrating and to keep him learning. The books do contain special sounds ("ch," "sh," etc.), but the intro of each book takes a moment to cover the new sounds and any "fun" sight words so he is prepared (not frustrated) when he comes to the new words.

This is book 5 of a series produced by Scholastic books to help students who are learning their phonics to focus on the "short u" sound in "hug" and "puppy". The books are small, paperback titles, only eight pages long, with some pages only including 1-3 words -- about the size and weight of a Hallmark greeting card.
While the content does emphasize the "short u" sound, the text and illustrations are barely remininscent of the original Clifford by Norman Bridwell. I'd say Scholastic only partially reached their goal in the production.
If I were buying this book for "short u" content, I might be satisfied, but if I were buying this for "Clifford" content, I'd be very disappointed.

The materials in this phonic sets are appropriate for beginner readers. My daughter can read these books. There are good repetitions of the key words for memorization. You get 12 books in this set.

I have a 3YO son who can read any word he can sound out like cat, sit etc.
I got this set because I wanted what it promised - Phonics - LEVEL ONE. That is, words that can be sounded out, without having to learn about exceptions.
Sure, it has those words in it. But it mixes them up with words like "Emily", "friends", "funny", "fast, "race", "down", "house".
A key to learning anything is to take it one step at a time. This author does not know that.
So, this is not a level one book. It will be useful later on when he has learned a whole lot of rules and a bunch of other words. But by then, he won't need a book with only one or two sentences to a page.
