My students find these songs very engaging. They love coming up and pointing at the words with a ruler while we sing. Even the shy students get involved.

I taught very first grade last year, and my students LOVED using this book! Their favorite song was about "Rick and Nick are feeling sick, call the doctor quick, quick, quick!" sung to the tune of "Clementine." We used it at least once a week to introduce a new word family or to review an old one. We played games with it, and it was available quite often as a center. It comes with a CD but I don't think I ever used it because I had a piano in my room, so I just played along!
