Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
This fast-paced novel sheds new light on the story of Jesus and his times. You will meet:

· JESUS, who was born, lived and died as a Jew; who drew on his Jewish tradition; who taught the love of man and God; and who saw himself as the Messiah.
· JUDAS, who believed in Jesus from start to finish; who became trapped in a political power-play; and who still believed desperately that he was helping Jesus bring the New Heaven and the New Earth into being.
· BARABBAS, head of the Zealots, who believed in violence against Rome.
· MARY MAGDALENE, a prostitute, who offered Judas her kind of love, while he offered her a different kind of love.
· CAIAPHAS, the High Priest, who was under total control of Pontius Pilate, the Roman procurator.
· RABBI GAMALIEL, head of the Sanhedrin, who would not deliver Jesus, or any innocent Jew, to death.
· PONTIUS PILATE, who saw Jesus as a threat to Rome, and schemed his death.

Rolf Gompertz, an observant, practicing Jew, who fled Nazi Germany with his parents, says: “I wanted to create understanding between Jews and Christians, so we may live together, side by side, respectful of one another, in dignity and peace.”

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Jesus at Home Among His People
My name is Leon Zitzer. I am Jewish and write a lot about the historical Jesus. Recently, I had a chance to read "A Jewish Novel About Jesus". The following is an email I sent to the author (to find my own work on Jesus, just Google my name):

It moves along very well, more like a play or filmscript with all the dialogue, which is what I like. Personally, I wanted to see Judas and Mary Magdala run off and get married. That's what I always wish for. I want to see lovers live happily ever after.

Portraying Judas as worrying and being unsure, and Jesus as moody, and all the disciples as having their doubts in one scene is very good. I especially liked the scene between the fat guy and the skinny guy arguing over whether Jesus is the Messiah or not (111-12). That seems to me historically realistic.

My favorite scenes are between Rabban Gamaliel and Caiaphas, or any scenes with Gamaliel as you give a good portrait of a Pharisee in him. Gamaliel explaining things to Judas (133-34) is my most favorite episode. And my second is when Gamaliel explains to Caiaphas that we don't seek the death penalty for such disputes (124-25).

The only thing I would have done differently (besides my point that the high priest did not help to kill Jesus) is that I would show Pharisees debating and disagreeing about Torah so that Jesus is another Jew doing the same. Pharisees constantly disputed amongst themselves, as you know. When R. Yochanan's chief debating partner Resh Lakish died, R. Yochanan said that
he was now like a man trying to applaud God with one hand. (The story of Yochanan and Resh Lakish is in both Talmuds, but this remark about applauding is only in the Jerusalem Talmud.)

Jesus too was part of this applause. I am sure you know that. I'm just saying that so did the Pharisees. Jesus was a fellow applauder to them, not a troublemaker. No one branded Shammai or Hillel a troublemaker, even though they disagreed about practically everything.

But other than that, I think Christian readers would come away
from your novel with a better appreciation of Pharisees. Hopefully, it will make them less willing to blame Judaism itself for Jesus' death. I would take pages 124-25 (Gamaliel talking to Caiaphas) and paste it to the mirrors or walls of Christian homes, if I could. I hope Christians who do read your book get it and remember it. If they want confirmation of what Gamaliel was like, they only have to go to the New Testament, Acts 5:34-40, where Gamaliel saves the lives of Peters and others.
