Product Description:
When Holland Carter is called out to Chicago to help friend and fellow detective Sam Books, he is eager to assist. A series of brutal murders have occurred at a staggering rate. All the victims have two things in common: they're all recent parolees, and they've all been found with their skull truncated, and the brain carefully removed. Convinced that something else links the deaths, Carter jeopardizes his professional future to uncover the truth, pursuing a trail that leads to the front doors of a distinguished medical center. But the truth is even more shocking than Carter imagined--for there is another dimension to the whole affair, one that neither he nor Sam could have anticipated. . . .

This book flies. I had just read a couple of books that I thought were pretty lame and needed something fast and exciting. A woman I work with recommended Bill Clem to me. I did a little research and found that this book is the very first in a series for fictional detective Holland Carter. (I hate to read a series out of order, even if the stories are independent and don't continue from book to book.) Diencephalon is a perfect "fun" read. It moves at a very rapid pace. (The chapters are usually just a few pages.) It has pretty well developed characters considering its quick pace and more plot twists than you'll ever anticipate. Another thing that makes this book so good is that despite the surprising plot twists everything is fairly believable within the context of the story. I read a lot of mystery/suspense and one of my biggest complaints is that I'll get really into a book and the climax will be totally ridiculous. Diencephalon has none of that. It's consistent, quick and exciting! Read it!

Once again, Bill Clem has come up with a breezy yet terrifying page-turner. For a man with a medical background, Clem has nailed the police procedural in a very personal, yet accessible manner. The villians are chilling, the heroes flawed, the story frightening in its possibilities. Clem, simply put, has done it again!
