First off, if you are planning on using this text and it is your very first chem course, you might find it too fast paced but if it's not your very first course then, no, you'll find it challenging but manageable. The book does a great job explaining the more complex qualitative nature of chemistry but when it comes time to put those theories to the test the book comes short. It'll provide a decently described, worked out problem or two but the practice problems at the end of each chapter often do not coincide with the examples, rendering the examples useless in a practical classroom setting. Not even the most gifted Chem professor could compensate for a lack of adequate practice problems--and to get an A you'll need a lot of them. For this reason I suggest what many do, a book of just solved, worked through examples like "3,000 Solved Problems in Chemistry" or whatever works. Zumdahl Chemistry is a great book, given you find a nice book of practice problems, that can be read pretty smoothly even if self-taught as far as Chem texts go. I spent a whole year of my life inside this book, it really is a 5 star text at it's heart but because practice is key in Chem I give it a 3/5 star rating with absolutely no regrets about buying a home copy.

This is a very good book to learn chemistry. I am only in 7th grade, and this book has greatly helped me understand the concept of chemistry. It clearly explains some this field, though sometimes, I have to analyze and think about the text because of a complicated part. I am not very far with this book, but I believe college and high school students can get farther than I am. So, if you are studying chemistry, this is definately the best book to buy.

I used this book for two first-year inorganic chemistry courses when taking my engineering degree. This book has lots of examples, as well as explaining concepts quite clearly. There's no difficult math in this book; it's all algebra, and a few logarithms for things like pH calculation, so it would be good for people without a strong math background.

I am an IB Chemistry SL student this year (junior in high school) and this is the text provided as a backbone for the learning of the class. Upon consulting the book numerous times for further understanding of concepts introduced in class, I was disappointed to repeatedly find nothing extremely helpful.
The book focuses on inserting interesting pictures and large diagrams rather than actually explaining concepts thoroughly. The example problems given to reinforce the student's learning are ridiculously simple and do not represent the level of learning expected of an International Baccalaureate Chemistry student. Chemistry is my favorite subject and the concepts are easily comprehensible for me. However, my learning this year can be attributed to my teacher's lectures and my own interest and drive to research the principles on the internet or in my dad's college chem books. I asked my teacher what she thought of it and she expressed similar dissatisfaction, saying that had the school more money, we would have a much better chem book.
Overall, the book is an insufficient tertiary source that should not be relied on for in-depth learning of the complexities of Chemistry.
