Great book. A total primer on great jazz guitar solos. The playing on the companion CD is highly accurate and a great guide for the solos. Totally awesome.

Great book. The tabs are right and despite the solo analysis could be deeper, the book remains worthwile. Definetly it's a very good purchase. If you are not familiar with jazz guitar and jazz music, I would recommend you to buy other books before, don't try to learn licks, try to undestand the music and the way it works.

I picked this book up based on endorsements on the cover. Guys like Jimmy Bruno, Pat Martino, and Hank Garland say very positive things about it.
The tunes are:
St Thomas (Tal Farlow, Jim Hall, Kenny Burrell)
All Blues (George Benson Kenny Burrell, Pat Martino)
So What (George Benson, Barney Kessel)
All the Things You Are (Hank Garland, Pat metheny)
Honeysuckle Rose (Joe Pass/ Herb Ellis duet, Charlie Christian)
Satin Doll (Howard Roberts, Joe Pass)
Yesterdays (Johnny Smith, Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery)
Misty (Wes Montgomery, Howard Roberts, Barney Kessel)
I'll Remember April (Johnny Smith, Grant Green)
How Insensitive (Pat Martino, Emily Remler)
I am a hobbist so this is very useful for me. As for doing your own transcriptions, sure do it, but check it against these transcriptions or else you could have the WALLOWING IN YOUR OWN MISTAKES problem. Highlights for me: Joe Pass on Satin Doll (I wish he had Joe's Misty from Virtuoso 2), The Miles tunes, and the Wes tunes. I have been working on a chord melody of All the Things You Are so it was nice to see these versions (again Joe Pass's version would have been better).

The idea of comparing different interpretations of the same tunes is fine, but it was not well done in this book. Even if the exemples chosen are nice in terms of how they can be reinterpreted, some tunes aren't the best of the guitar player in focus. That is particularly the case of Pat Metheny.

I 've been looking for some serious jazz material for sometime... this is it! You can hear the sounds you love and hear how to play them, then you can even figure out the theory behind it so you can use similar passages in your improvs... this book is seriously educational and practical...
