Kim Edwards's THE MEMORY KEEPERS DAUGHTER is a heart-rendering tale of a fatal mistake taken out of love or fear. The telling suffers by the constant switching of points-of-view, and excessive details that add nothing to the story.
Sorry folks, when an epic snowstorm hit Lexington, KY in the 1960's, you didn't hop in a car and drive I64 (into the path of the storm) to Louisville. You didn't last week either! This was a rather large detail that held the reader back from an early connection with the story characters and their problems.
The photographic detail of the father's passion was outstanding and his disconnection with the world around him was beautifully done. This quality of writing lifted the story out of the ordinary.
Nash Black, author of WRITING AS A SMALL BUSINESS and SINS OF THE FATHERS.

This could have been a compelling story. Sadly, the author appears to have spent most of her writing energy looking up adjectives to endlessly describe shafts of light or leaves falling. In the end, I simply did not care what happened to her characters, I found myself skimming pages in search of anything that would push the story forward...never found much.

The main story happens within the very first 100 pages of the book. You can save yourself reading even the very first 100 pages by reading the book flap instead. Kim Edwards struggles for the subsequent 300 pages to add substance to the story. She is a very descriptive writer and can write for a half page or more on how lint looks on a shirt. I felt that she used her creative descriptions to compensate for a lack of story in the book. I found myself distracted by her writing style and skimming entire pages hoping to find some substance in the story.

The most talked about book today. A phenomenal very first novel by Edwards. The choice of a father to hide the birth of one of his twins has far reaching consequences."
