Product Description:
In paperback for the very first time, the Sisters Grimm take readers to a world where fairy tales are fact and not everyone is who they seem!
In book one of this bestselling series, sisters Sabrina and Daphne are sent to live with their mysterious grandmother, Relda Grimm. The sisters learn they are descendants of the Brothers Grimm, whose famous book of fairy tales is actually a collection of case files. The girls are the latest in a long line of fairy-tale detectives, and their new hometown is filled with Everafters (as magical folks like to be called)—some good and some very, very bad. When a mysterious Everafter sets a giant loose on the town, it’s up to the Sisters Grimm to save the day.

I've now reading book 4 of this series and love it. I bought the very first two books in the series on Sunday and had to go back to the store on Tuesday after I had already finished both books to buy the rest in the series.
The very first book really held my attention as the author not only writes well developed, interesting characters but the storyline is wonderful too. It's imaginative, funny and smart. A perfect read for any adult or kid. I highly recommend this book and the rest in the series as they would be a perfect gift for a kid or adult who likes fantasy books.

Every time I went to the bookstore, I perused the children's section. And every single time I was in the children's section, I would finger the spines on the Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley. By the time this very first book came out in paperback, I decided to buy it. Heck, if I didn't like it, at least I could give it to my little cousin.
Let's just say after reading this book, I've bought every single book in the Sisters Grimm series. It's just that good. Admittedly, there are a great number of books out there--for adults and for young adults--that revolve around the fractured fairy tale (or the like). What I like about Buckely's series, and what I think sets it apart from the others, is its humor. The book is just plain funny.
For one things, I really like the twist that they are Sisters Grimm rather than Brothers Grimm, and how the former is related to the latter. And instead of being a simple retelling of a Grimm tale, it incorporates those tales into one unique, stand-alone story. There's a sense of familiarity for the reader: We know of Snow White, the Big Bad Wolf, Prince Charming. The twist comes in that we don't know that Snow is a teacher, Wolf is a friend, and Charming is . . . Well, let's just say he's NOT so charming in this book!
These altered characterizations makes them NEW, which makes them interesting. It makes us want to read about them. Don't let the page count fool you, especially for those reluctant readers. The margins and gutter width are generous, the typesize is large, and the leading between lines is quite spacious. Don't get me wrong; that doesn't mean that there's no density to the books. There's plenty to read, but just in case there are younger readers who may turn away from a book of this length, to them I say, "You won't even notice how long it is!"
Plus, saying you read a book that's more than 200 pages is a pretty good accomplishment, indeed.
Read this book, and then move forward through the rest of the series. It's well worth the effort.

In the year and a half since their parents disappeared, Sabrina and Daphne Grimm have bounced around from one foster family to another, all of them horrid. And things aren't looking up. They've just been dropped off with their Granny Relda in the two of Ferrypoint Landing, New York. The problems? Ferrypoint Landing looks like a boring small town. And the girls had grown up believing that their grandmother was dead.
While Daphne quickly attaches herself to her strange new relative, Sabrina is far from willing to give her a chance. Especially when the woman starts telling the girls that they are the decendants of the Brothers Grimm and the stories are real. The case of a supposed giant in the area further irritates Sabrina. Is Granny Relda telling the truth? Is so, how can they stop a giant?
This series may be aimed at kids, but any adult would love it as well. I got such a kick out of seeing just who would pop up in the story. And the book doesn't just stick to traditional fairy tales. Characters from the Oz series and Alice in Wonderland pop up, for example.
The story started off a little slowly, mainly because it needed time to set things up. Once the book truly got going, I couldn't put it down. A couple scenes might frighten young children, but I think most of the intended audience should be okay with the events.
This isn't your normal happily ever after fairy tale. It is fairy tales for a post modern world. It is absolutely inventive and fun. I can't wait to read the second in the series.

I purchased this book because I have been enjoying books that contain familiar characters, but in a different context. Most notably, books by Jasper Fforde-both the literary Thursday Next series that brings the classics in, and the Nursery Crime series which brings mystery into everyday nursery rhymes. I had read other reviews here on Amazon and decided to give the Sisters Grimm a try.
The book starts out with a pair of girls, sisters and orphans. They're on the train to meet their grandmother, whom they have believed to have been dead. Once you've been introduced to the characters, the interaction amongst fairy tale characters begins. The girls and their grandmother are investigating a house 'explosion' when Mr. Charming (also known as Prince Charming) shows up on the scene. Jack of Jack and the Beanstalk becomes a character of note, and readers are quickly trying to remember the different Grimms tales that they've read as children. (And other fairy tales/nursery rhymes as well.)
As an adult, I found this book to be a quick read, and I did enjoy it. Given that the suggested reading level is for grades 3-6, I find it right on par. Enough interest to engage the younger reader, but also enough to also entertain even the oldest of readers. I look forward to continuing the series.
