Product Description:
Follow me into the bowels of Harlem as I walk the streets of what is known as, 'the ghetto capital of the world'. Journey with me through the eighties when LL was rocking the bells, and Roof Top, and the Rink was the place to be. Make moves with me to buy big birds and big whips riding up and down I-95 like the world was mine. Let me take you back to a time when you could walk into a dealership and pay cash for a whip and walk out the door with no problems. Put on your stocking caps and hoodies and creep with me. See as I see and do as I do. Let me take you back to a time that Harlem kept on making it, and Brooklyn kept on taking it, and queens kept on faking it. The birth of a criminal is just that. It is a story of a young mans dream to be everything in one man. It is a journey into the life of a boy who became a man walking on the wild side of life going 90 miles in a thirty mile lane. Let me take you to a place that murder is sold wholesale and your subsequent move could be your last. This is the story of the story that was never written, yet meant to be. It is the truth untold that was not meant to be sold. Follow a family plagued with the curse of every one of them being exposed to the brutal realities of a cold prison system. It is a classic novel of sex, money, drugs and murder. The only difference is it’s as real as the air you breathe. This book is so truthful and brutally honest that you have a personal guarantee from the author for a full refund.

"Asante Kahari delivers a powerful autobiographical reincarnation of his life as a true gangster of the streets in Harlem, with a crime ridden past that is thankfully all behind him. What is amazing is his determination to turn his life around as a writer. The book reads like an actual memoir from a true gangster and thus editing is an issue, the book is authentically synonymous with Asante's beginning steps as writer who sought to write a novel to change his life. This book is a gut wrenching depiction of a hard core life, and even readers are left with hope for Asante to stay on track. One of the most captivating memoirs to date! I had to ignore the grammar problems. I watched this well groomed gentleman sell books to hundreds of Harlemnites at an event I invited him to. He followed all of my directions. He stood out in the middle on
the street as I requested despite cars veering left and right. anyone would stop for that bright orange shirt he had on. People in trucks and cars did finally stop to get the man's books. Some hoods stole a few with swift talking distractions. He was confident he'd sell all of his books, and I could tell he would make it regardless of what obstacles will stand in his way and do not realize that the man is an authentic author. No one can take this away from Mr. Kahari. He will write and sell more books, I'm sure. He has the heart and determination. I have never heard from him since. There are things he revealed. I am not sure if I am the only person who knows these things, so I will wait until the media discovers the genius of this author. Then there is this powerful manuscript he wrote. I think this author will be a millionaire very soon and is sorry for his past escapades, but to show emotions would be a sign of weakness. Urban authors never show weaknesses."

THE BIRTH OF A CRIMINAL is a reflection of Asante Kahari's life growing up in poverty. The book is "supposedly" based on events that occurred within the author's life, yet Kahari often changes names, details, and calls the work "fiction" as not to implicate himself or others in crimes. The book follows no distinct pattern or form; it often repetitive and jumps around, which leave the reader confused. At times the book reads like a journal, other times a novel, and it seems to be more of a vent than an actual literary work. Kahari professes that he is not a writer, and the quality of the book leans toward what he has said. The author writes the book with no clear sense of who the audience is. In the beginning of the book, he claims the book is a "work to be studied to inform white America of the problems facing her if they don't do something about the problems of urban America." Later he states that the book is written for young, blacks that may take a moral lesson away from his story. Yet he never points out a compelling argument or reasoning to keep young readers from taking take to streets. If anything, he glorifies his tales of the streets and his stints in prison. He shows little or no remorse for the crimes he has committed, and gives the impression that writing this novel is a legitimate "hustle" for him.
Despite its flaws, the book does have redeeming characteristics. Kahari's story is one that is filled with action and drama, which makes the book an interesting read. With proper editing, a better organization of the events, and a knowledge of who his audience is, THE BIRTH OF A CRIMINAL would have unlimited potential, and perhaps be a must read.

I should very first say that I did not purchase this book and it was given to me to read. It is not a book that I would usually choose to read but I was intrigued enough by the title to begin reading. I must say that the book kept me captivated enough to read through from beginning to end in one afternoon. The logical flow made it a bit difficult to follow at some points and there were some inconsistencies in the writing style but overall it was very entertaining. I couldn't help feeling like a voyeur in the mind of this young man and I remember a time when I was faced with many of the same choices he had to make (albeit I am a woman). I chose a different path but I know many that got "caught-up" in the street life too. I was a little disappointed because I wanted to find a message to take to my younger brothers but I felt that much of the writing in this book glorified street life complete with shout outs to notorious gangsters. Was this a feigned endeavor to gain street credibility? I almost got it when the author wrote about the twenty-somethings that are now making six figure salaries indicating that there are others who chose different paths that lead to better lives for themselves and their families. I would have liked to read more about those people. Still, I am consoled by the author's realization that he needed to release the pain of the past in order to move forward. I would encourage the author to keep writing, keep striving, and keep hoping for something better in life.
