Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Mark Steyn's writing on the great American songbook has been hailed by composers, lyricists and connoisseurs of good music, from The Tonight Show's Steve Allen to the Pet Shop Boys. The former called Broadway Babies Say Goodnight 'Mark Steyn's dazzling commentary on popular music culture', and the latter consulted it when writing their own musical. So here by popular demand is Steyn's take on some of his favorite lyrics, some of his favorite music, and what happens when you put them together to create a classic song. This volume includes essays on pop standards from The Way You Look Tonight to Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! to I've Got You Under My Skin: the songs that get under your skin and stay.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Fun book but a little pricey
Mark Steyn is a gifted writer with a keen eye and good ear. His book "Broadway Babies Say Goodnight" was one of the most insightful books I have read on American Musical Theater.
This book is a more in depth look at one writer. I don't want to give the "plot" away but he writes about Dorothy Fields and her music and then takes what he considers her top 20 and discusses them. There is also a chapter on a Cole Porter song. This book is a fun read and imparts information in a quick and easy manor. I think the cost was a little high for the amount of material contained, but I am still glad I bought it.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - A Severe Letdown.
I cannot believe Mark Steyn had anything to do with this dreadful excuse of a book!
I have been a fan of his Broadway criticism since his great book "Broadway Babies Say Goodnight : Musicals Then and Now", his analysis is always perceptive and he is an irascible devil.
This new publication is a small book (120 pages) littered with unnecessary pictures and bizarrely large type so it has scant actual text. I mean really scant!! I was shocked when I very first opened it and thought i had just bought a children's book!
It is way over-priced and i am scandalised that Mr. Steyn would let this thing be published!
What happened Mark?? Where did it all go wrong??
