Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Beautifullly illustrated "My First Signs" board book...
I bought this board book for my niece's 2nd birthday. She is neither deaf nor hard of hearing, however, she does have a slight delay in terms of verbal communication. My brother and sister-in-law have taught her a few signs, which she uses with enthusiasm. When I saw this book, I was excited because I thought it would expand on what she already knows and help her as she develops her communication skills.

The book is beautifully illustrated, so colorful and really nice to look at. Each baby is pictured using a different sign and subsequent to the picture is a brief description of what the sign is (and how to make it). The descriptions are very easy to understand.

I was not aware when I bought the book that it uses British signs but that does not bother me (since my niece only uses signs to communicate with her parents and family). If she did need sign language to communicate with the rest of the world, then that fact would bother me since I'd want consistency for her. Otherwise, I think this book is a nice tool for developing babies.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great Introduction!
I intorduced this book to my son at 9 months old and he loved it from the very beginning. He loved the illustrations and how big it was. We liked to prop the book on the couch and practice together.
I understand that some of the signs might be different than ASL, but I think to argue over that is missing the point. This book is meant as an INTRODUCTION. It is meant to just get your kids to understand that they can sign as a form of communicating and its fun.
My son quickly learned all the signs from this book and we have since had to move on to more advanced books. But he still loves to pull it out everyonce in a while for some reason and go back over it. I think its the illustrations. Since buying the book I have bought more books by the author and illustrator. He loves those too.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Good start
This is a good start to ASL for very young babies. Illustrations are easy to understand. Only drawback is the number of words in the book. You will have to invest in a book with more words before long.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A good start
I think this is a great starter book if you just want to teach your baby basic signs.
I am hard of hearing and use ASL every day with my baby, husband and friends. I received this book as a gift and its been fun for my daughter to look at (Plus, it has tips on the bottom of each page of how and when to teach your baby. example: "Repetition is very important. Use every opportunity to sign. Be patient and don't get frustrated. This should be fun!"). I am puzzled at the review about it being BSL, because I didn't see any BSL signs in there. Perhaps there are two versions, but all the signs in my book are ASL (I know, I double checked, ha). But it IS meant to be for babies, basic and simple. Its for the basic point of giving you the ability to communicate with your child. Even when they start signing they'll start doing it their way. But YOU will understand what they are saying and that is whats important. It may not even look like the real sign for a while, but they'll get it eventually. Its great to avoid the frustration of not understanding what my daughter wants, because she knows some of these basic signs.
If you want to continue teaching your baby signing, or want a book that teaches more than just basic baby signs ( and it is very centered around ASL), I'd recommend: "Sign With Your Baby" by Joseph Garcia.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Very Cute Book!
My two year old Loves it. In just three weeks he has learned 10 signs.
