When her father is assigned the task of spying on the French Court, the charming and sweetly innocent Anne Boleyn is delighted by the thought of a new adventure. And she is not to be disappointed, for her beautiful sister, Mary, has been handed a mission: to let herself be seduced by the King of France in order to uncover his secrets.
Mesmerized by the thrilling passion, intrigue, and betrayal that unfolds, Anne discovers the power of being a woman who catches the eye of a powerful king. And, as she grows into a beautiful young woman, she undergoes her own sexual awakening, each daring exploit taking her one step closer to the life that is her destiny.

For those die-hard Phillipa Gregory (ala "The Other Boleyn Girl") fans, this book seems to historically contradict what Anne Boleyn did as a child. I am sure the historical facts are well researched (who am I to contend them? I just read the stuff, not study it.) but there are basic tenets that do not mesh. That is all well and good. If we can suspend our belief that one is more accurate than the other, we can move on to the story.
I loved it. The imagery was wonderful, colorful and vivid. I was never bored and the story arc was well developed. I didn't even mind the cliff-hanger ending because we know what must happen afterward right?
If you are faint of heart, there are a few caveats. The vividness is not all flowers and dress. The descriptions of love, hate and even sex is sometimes (read: usually) shocking. The way that men view the placement and duty of women was downright offensive to modern feminism but must have been true in that era. I got over it in order to get through the beautiful story and I was not dissappointed.

It was eye opening to think about what Anne Boleyn's years in the French court must have been like, and to make the connections between the people she was exposed to - Like the King's sister, Marguerite, a well-known intellectual and adherent of the new religion - and Anne's later apparent religious convictions and behavior. It helps one understand why Henry VIII might have been captivated by a commoner who had been cultured by this fine foreign court. It also personalizes history which I always finds helps me remember it better.
A fine effort.

"Mademoiselle Boleyn" is a great novel about Anne Boleyn's years in France. I appreciated this spin on her story because we rarely are given stories about her except about how she "bewitched" Henry, married him, her "treason/infidelities/incest", and of course her tragic end. I have always liked Maxwell's writing style, and this book is no exception to her great skill in weaving together a story. I liked Anne for the most part, though at times she seemed one-dimensional. I also liked how Mary Boleyn wasn't potrayed as a complete whore or the charming innocent as Philippa Greagory painted her to be. A drawback however was that some of the novel's threads were left hanging or didn't seem to add to the flow of the story. However, like others have said, if you truly enjoy Maxwell's writing, this is another good read.

This has a different historical perspective on Anne Boleyn and her personality. It has a lot of sexual parts that seem to be the most interesting, and some of the book is boring. Yet at the end, I wanted it to go on (stopping at when she goes to King Henry's castle). An interesting perspective, and a bit of a history lesson. I'd give it 6 out of 10 stars.
