Product Description:
'This kind of fun will never fail to delight'. - Philip Pullman. 'Find me a witch!' cried Arriman the Awful, feared Wizard of the North. Arriman has decided to marry. His wife must be a witch of the darkest powers - but which witch will she be? To find the most fiendish, he holds a spell-casting competition. Glamorous Madame Olympia performs the terrifying Symphony of Death and conjures up a thousand plague-bearing rats. The magic of gentle Belladonna, the white witch, goes hopelessly wrong. She produces perfumed flowers instead of snakes. And bats roost in her golden hair instead of becoming blood-sucking vampires. Poor Belladonna longs to be an evil enchantress - but how? This is shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal.

Amazon.com Review:
Arriman the Awful, Loather of Light and Wizard of the North, needs a wife. How else can he have a wizard baby to carry on the family tradition of blighting and smiting, blasting and wuthering? The problem is, wizards can only marry one kind of person--a witch. Arriman dreads the thought. 'A great grey crone with warts and blisters in unmentionable places from crashing about on her broom! You want me to sit opposite one of those every morning eating my cornflakes?' But a witch it must be, so Arriman holds a contest to decide which witch. The local witches are all atwitter over what spell they'll perform for the contest--all except Belladonna, who is, to her great shame, a white witch. She looks rather like the girl on the Clairol Herbal Essence bottle, with a sweet face and flowing blonde hair. 'There was usually something in Belladonna's hair: A fledgling blackbird parked there by its mother while she went to hunt for worms, a baby squirrel wanting somewhere safe to eat its hazel nuts, or a butterfly who thought she was a lily or a rose.'

Black spells are cast, enchantments are woven, and even Belladonna manages to do a little damage in this wonderfully clever 1979 book by Eva Ibbotson (of The Secret of Platform 13). Young readers will delight in the way Ibbotson glories in the ghoulish and the gory--and in her engaging characters who are kindly and fiendish all at once. Which Witch (finally reissued in the United States) begs to be read aloud, with before-bed-length chapters and lots of opportunities for funny voices. (Ages 9 and older) --Claire Dederer

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Amazing, Fun, Entertaining
The book Which Witch is a very good book. The book is about a wizard named Arriman and he decided to marry and Arriman has to choose a witch. But Arriman absolutely does not want to marry.....but in the end of the argument the security and body guard (Lester the Ogre and Mr. Lead Better) convince him to marry. Finally Arriman and Mr. Lead Better decide to host a contest like the Miss America contest (except the witches won't parade around in their bathing suits!). The contest will see which witch can do the darkest magic and the witch who does the darkest magic will be Arriman's wife.

But only the witches of Todcaster can participate and the witches of Todcaster are Mabel Wrack, Ethel Feedbag, Nancy Shouter, Nora Shouter, Mother Bloodwart, Belladonna, and Gwendolyn Swamp. But one witch called Madame Olympia does something to make poor Gwendolyn move out of her house so Madame Olympia could get a very big chance to win.

The pictures in the collage represent the magic performed by each of the witches that want to marry Arriman.

Mother Bloodwart did an old-fashioned trick with a broomstick. (None of the witches had ever dared to fly a broomstick since the crash in a ventilation shaft). Nancy Shouter made a bottomless grey hole (and shoved Nora into it). Mabel Wrack did her trick by the sea and called forth the Kraken (instead she got the baby kraken). Ethel locked a family up into three different trees an Oak, an Ash, and a Thorn tree. (The kid and the mother hated the trees but the father loved it!) Madame Olympia did a trick where skeleton rats ate each other up (she got a very high score.) And Belladonna is going to raise Sir Simon from the dead (hopefully!)

Who will Arriman marry? If you would like to know read the book Which Witch.

Eva Ibbotson is my favorite author by far. This is the very first book that she wrote that I read and I enjoyed it Immensely. This book turned me on to the author by its creativity and cleverness. The imagination that it took to write this book is amazing. Every detail in the story is so clear you can see it. I give this book 5 stars.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Just plain cute from the homophonic title
This is my absolute favorite story from the mighty pen of Eva Ibbotson. Maybe it's because I love a good fluffy love story. Maybe it's because I like an infusion of odd fantasy every now and then. Maybe it is simply because this is a great story that has a little bit of something for everyone.

In the spirit of Harry Potter, I was sucked into the story with its charming beginning when a set of average parents are practical enough to change their parenting style when they learn their infant son is actually destined to be a dark sorcerer. See? How can you not love this?

This sets into motion a story of warlocks, witches, and extinct sea monsters, all wrapped in the strangest beauty pageant on the face of the earth.

The characters are quirky and adorable despite all their weirdest (or maybe because of that). They're not terribly complex, but fun and fresh just the same and all the more entertaining for the storybook personalities. It was a well-thought plot that allowed its characters to do the work even as it let itself twist.

The ending came as a surprise to me, but I loved the sheer sweetness of this strange, cute story.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Frightfully funny!
Arriman the Awful, a wizard of great power and darkest evil, has grown bored with his life. Realizing that he needs a son to carry on the cause of darkness and evil, Arriman searches for a suitable wife. Only a witch of the darkest evil will serve, but which witch? The obvious course of action is found, a competition in evil witchcraft, with the witches in formal evening gowns!

Among the witches, though, there is one who nobody expects to win, the pretty and (most shockingly) white witch Belladonna. Alone among the witches, Belladonna has fallen in love with Arriman. When the exceedingly evil Madame Olympia, who has already married and done away with five husbands, Belladonna realizes that she must be blacker than she has ever dreamed of being if she is going to win the contest and save Arriman. But how?

This book is frightfully funny (pardon the pun)! The characters are interesting and funny; the storyline slides along keeping you glued to the pages. This is a great book, suitable for all ages. I highly recommend this book.
