Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - First book I ever threw away!
The Plague Dogs: A Novel
I could not stand the pain of reading this book. I know, things like this happen to our animals. After reading the ending of the book, I was so angry that I went to the wastebasket and threw the book away. I wish, the ending had been more clear.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Just Short of Greek Tragedy....
This book has an awful lot going for it and a couple of detractors.

First, the good stuff
- In the style of Classic Tragedy you see the main characters facing difficult life decisions with ethical implications all around and along the way, you the reader, begin to discover the pull of emotions that shape so many of the choices we have to make. The sense of "fate" building up a tragic climax permeates the whole stuff of the book.

- This is a book about the beauty of friendship in the face of incredible odds. The dogs are "humanized" of course and hence their friendship is much more human than doggy.. but the contrast with the Tod reminds us that friendship empowers a quality of life that transcends any of the troubles that beset us all.

- This book is also about humans... perhaps more than dogs... you begin to wonder if there are any noble ones around... but hang in there..

Cons
- the descriptive prose begins to tire after a while. I know the landscape was beautiful but it is a bit much.

- the ending is a bit weak in my thinking... the author enters into a dialog with a representative reader and then uses a literary device of inserting himself as the topic of conversation between two characters. It was a kind of narcissism which was distracting. It knocked it down from five stars in my estimation.

All in all, very good book and well worth the reading. You will like it I assure you.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - A Beautiful Book

This really is a super novel. The copy just acquired is my third copy, having had the film tie-in before and prior to that the late seventies original paperback. Read very first when at school, I fell in love with the book having absorbed the wonders of Watership Down - although Plague Dogs is far from a childrens book. Mixing the wonderful companionship of Rowf and Snitter, the horrors of the animal testing station, the excitement of escape and the evocotive Lake District countryside the story charts the dogs' progress on their journey without sidestepping the realities of life in the wild - for 2 dogs used to having their food provided for them; rather than becoming hunters and scavengers themselves whilst the worst hunter of all, man, is hunting them. Buy this book and treasure it. This copy has a beautiful glossy cover of the two escapees and as an American print the northern dialect has been slightly toned down but without losing the charm of the book. Prepare to enjoy, enthrall, laugh - and probably cry too.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Oh Snitter & Rowf!!!
I cried several times while reading this book, and I didn't want it to end.

I guess it is pretty hard to get into, and sometimes it's a little tiresome, but I think it's well worth it. I loved this book. Makes me want to go out and adopt a cute little Snitter and make sure nothing bad ever happens to him.

Also, I was so thankful for the ending. I was dreading the end because I thought it would be terribly tragic,

P.S. poor tod.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Fun Book
It was kind of hard for me to start this book but found it gets better the more you read as the dogs progress in their journey across the countryside. In a way I almost liked it better than Adams's Watership Down as you really feel so sad for the dogs in how mankind has turned against them (I am sure dog owners will really understand this).
I have an edition that was printed in Great Britain so it was hard to understand some of the dialect without explanation (as Adams explains it a bit in the American printed version's preface). It wasn't until the middle of the book while looking at one of the map pictures that I found out "the tod" is a fox. Great book!
