I read a lot of historical fiction pertaining to Tudor times and was interested in reading about a Tudor character that doesn't always play on the main stage. Henry VIII's sister, Mary, fit the bill.
The book, itself, was enjoyable; although, not riveting. Starting slowly, it eventually picked up steam. I found myself struggling with confusing dialogue in the beginning and either because I got used to the writing style, or because the author slowed the dialogue alittle, I found it easier to follow as I got further into the story. Near the end, I found the book to be difficult to put down. As I always do, I enjoyed the 'Author's Note' on the real facts at the end.
In genral, an enjoyable book about a character that hasn't always been a big focus in Tudor fiction.

I loved this book! As a long-time fan of Tudor history, I find there are LOTS of books out there - not all that good. Diane Haeger transports you back in time, and you feel as if you are a witness of the times. The book ended too soon, and I found I wanted to research Mary and find out more about her. My only complaint was with the publisher itself - who printed the book leaving about 30 pages out of a section. Amazon immediately made good on it and quickly replaced my book. Other than that - I totally recommend this book to anyone loving British history, or the plight of women who had the courage to "buck the system".

I found the characters to be somewhat two dimensional. Mary came across as a spoiled brat through most of the book then miraculously matured into the perfect queen. please.

"I will go to France and marry the old King Louis," stated Princess Mary in Diane Haeger's latest historical novel. "But if I am widowed, I ask only one small thing: allow me to make my future my own. After I have been useful to you, permit me to choose my own path." Mary is the beloved youngest sister of Henry VIII; she has been promised to the ailing, ancient king of France in order to forge a political alliance. Mary is heartbroken, for although she has known since childhood she was destined for such a fate, she has found the love of her life in an entirely different place. Will she risk the fragile ties between England and France, and her brother's wrath, for true love?
The Secret Bride is based on the true romance of Princess Mary and Charles Brandon. Several side plot lines within the novel add colour and intrigue to Mary's story. While it is a work of fiction, the basic facts are historically accurate. I enjoyed the way Haeger delicately wove fact with fiction to bring alive a historic romance. Her characters are very believable and true to the known facts of the people on whom they are based. Each one's personalities, ambitions, and aspirations are well developed.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and would not hesitate to read another of Haeger's books.

This book is a must read for those who love the Tudor period in English history. It's well written and reads like a very first rate thriller-romance. You won't be able to put the book down once you start reading. I stayed up til 2 AM to finish.
