Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Chester is more than a picture book. It is a story told, and retold, by dueling author-illustrators. Melanie Watt starts out with the story of a mouse in a house. Then Melanie's cat, Chester, sends the mouse packing and proceeds to cover the pages with rewrites from his blue marker, and the gloves are off.Melanie and her mouse won't take Chester's antics lying down. And Chester is obviously a creative powerhouse with confidence to spare. Where will this war of the picture-book makers lead? Is it a one-way ticket to Chesterville, or will Melanie get her mouse production off the ground?

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Three Silly Chicks Review
Confession time. The book Chester by Melanie Watt, one of our favorite author-illustrators, is actually a 2007 book.

We know! We are so bad! How could we have missed this perfect picture book? Were we punchy from too much bean dip? It's entirely possible. Please don't hold it against us. If it really bugs you, well, just pretend it's a 2008 book.

The mouse in this book (called simply "mouse") keeps trying to tell his story, but the pushy-yet-lovable cat Chester will not stop interrupting. He barges in with his blue marker and crosses everything out the poor mouse writes. Mouse tries scaring Chester away with a big dog, but it's no use. Finally the author takes matters into her own hands. Her clever plan to put Chester in his place involves a tutu and a tiara. But will that really keep the pesky Chester away?

Every inch of this book is a pleasure, from the "place award sticker here" space on the cover to the biography of Chester himself on the back flap. We love how the author has played with the boundaries of a book to come up with something truly original and funny, even if it is a 2007 book.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Chester had Gender Issues
This is a cute book that features a battle of wills between a children's book illustrator and her cat. The pictures are great, especially after Chester 'improves' them to feature himself. The only problem I had was with the book was how Chester was drawn, as a calico with more than three colors in his coat.

Cats with more than three colors in their coat are almost always female - the multiple colors thing is a sex linked trait.

Personally, I wasn't surprised when Melanie drew Chester in a pink tutu to get even with him. I suspect Chester might have even enjoyed it.

This book is great but I hope the gender issues don't offend young children or rather, their uptight parents.

The book was fun and my granddaughters enjoyed it but it needed more story. The message was not clear and got lost in the pictures and all the blue marks. But it gave us lots of laughs.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Don't skip the dust cover
My kids laugh out loud at this book. They have me read every single one of Chester's blue pen scribbles, on every single page, including the copyright page ... even including the dust cover flaps! Very clever all the way through.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Great premise falls short-still a hit
My husband heard a review of this book on NPR and inspired our purchase. The premise of Chester editing the story as it's getting told, is a fantastic one and Chester clearly has the personality to pull it off. What would make it great is if there was actually a story for him to edit. The story never gets off the ground and it seems Chester would have even more material to show off his Chester-ness if there was something more to work with. Both my husband and I thought it was a "non-story". However, my 6-year-old thought Chester was a hoot and didn't seem to mind the lack of plot.
