Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Four and a half stars would be a smidge more accurate, but not an option so we go with five
After a wait of several months, I was finally able to get an affordable copy of 'Live Simply in the City.' It is worth the wait.

I agree with the one reviewer that points out that many of the suggestions the authors have included are from other books. However, that's one of the things I like about this book. By incorporating information from other sources on how to implement voluntary simplicity (VS) in your life, you have many good ideas in one place instead of having to reference several books at once.

The authors' momentum to write this book started when someone posted to the online discusion forum of the Simple Living Network that many people mistakenly assume that a simpler lifestyle is exclusive to living in a rural area. The authors' goal is to show that VS can be accomplished while living in the city. The basics of VS are discussed and followed by a sort of guidebook, chapter by chapter, of the many ways the concepts can be implemented while living in the city. Included are stories from other people on how they are successfully practicing VS in the city. Some of the topics included are a brief overview of money (for a more thorough discusion on finances you may want to check out 'Your Money or Your Life'), housing, transportation, retirement, kids and gardening. Each chapter ends with suggested actions and a listing of books and internet resources for additional information. The book concludes with a philosophical overview of transitioning to VS and additional suggestions and 'ideas to ponder' that were not included in the other chapters.

As an aside, a chapter on pets is included, but very little information is provided on city living with dogs. In fairness to the authors, it isn't a topic that can be addressed briefly in one chapter. Even though it was published in 1988, my favorite on the subject is 'The Evans Guide for Civilized City Canines' by Job Michael Evans. Other very good books are available if it is a subject you would like to research in depth.

If you can find an affordable copy of 'Live Simply in the City,' highly recommended!

Three other books that would make good companions to 'Live Simply in the City' are 'Your Money or Your Life' by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin, and 'Choosing Simplicity' by Linda Breen Pierce. For those of us that are retired or starting to think about retirement, an excellent addition is 'How to Retire Happy, Wild and Free' by Ernie Zelinski.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - Nothing new under this sun...
As someone who has lived their entire life near two major metropolitan cities (Atlanta and New York) and has delved deep into this subject, I found the content to have very little depth or originality. The overwhelming majority of what's featured has the type of hyperbole that's already mentioned in many other books in a much more detailed and informative fashion (How to Survive Without a Salary, Your Money or Your Life, The Tightwad Gazette series, etc.). At the time I am writing this there are also three used books being offered for sale on Amazon at $125 and up. I think you can come to your own conclusions on how much this paperback book should be worth.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Wonderful book!
If you have been longing for a simpler life, but don't know where to start, read Live Simply in the City. Whether you live in the city or not, you will find valuable ideas and resources in this immensely readable book. At the end of every chapter are references to helpful websites, community resources, books, and a wealth of information to help fill in your knowledge and assist you in getting started. This book is a compilation of years of study and experience -- the authors are true experts who 'walk the talk'. If you have never considered the city as a wellspring of rich assets for simple living, this book is a MUST READ!

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Excellent Resource
This book is a resource for every harried soul, longing for a saner pace, a map for the path of their life or a way to live in tune with their community and the earth. Allan and Cantwell make it clear that it is not necessary to have a cabin in the woods to live a simple life, and that thousands already quietly live their lives creatively and full of purpose in the city. The book has many insights from simple-livers and lists resources at the end of each chapter to help the reader get starter on their own journey to simplicity.
