Product Description:
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is more than just a set of techniques for structuring psychotherapeutic treatment; it also offers a new, insightful, transdiagnostic approach to case conceptualization and to mental health in general. Learn to put this popular new psychotherapeutic model to work in your practice with this book, the very first guide that explains how to do case conceptualization within an ACT framework.
ACT in Practice offers an introduction to ACT, an overview of its impact, and a brief introduction to the six core processes of ACT treatment--the six points of the hexaflex model and its pathological alter ego, the so-called inflexahex. It describes how to accomplish case conceptualizations in general and offers précis of the literature that establish the importance and value of case conceptualization. This guide also offers possible alternative case conceptualization for cases from different therapeutic traditions, a great help to therapists who come from a more traditional CBT background. Exercises throughout help you to evaluate the information you have just learned so that you may effectively integrate ACT into your practice.

Good case conceptualization is the hallmark of effective clinical practice. This book will walk you through the nuts and bolts of ACT case conceptualization and offers a set of skills and strategies that will round out your clinical repertoire. The authors nicely describe the behavior principles guiding ACT work and then aptly guide the reader in how to apply those principles in practice. For those new to ACT, this book makes clear that ACT is an approach, grounded in behavioral principles and a functional/process-based model of human suffering and its alleviation, and one that can be flexibly adapted to meet the unique needs of clients. The authors do a fine job of translating difficult concepts and showing their practical relevance. If you are already familiar with ACT, this book will add another layer of depth to your understanding of ACT and its practical application. I find myself referring to this book often in my clinical work, and have found it useful in teaching and training young professionals. Kudos to the authors!

As a relative newcomer to ACT conceptualization and treatment, I found this book to be invaluable. In an easily digestible manner, it covers the theoretical underpinnings of ACT as well as provides a framework to aid in determining a subsequent move in treatment sessions. The book is rich in detail and example and offers quick-reference schemas that bring the hexaflex concepts alive in session. It is unique in its attention to the inflexibility that undermines change. More than anything else, I found it offers many avenues of flexibility to me as a clinician to help me guide a client from an inflexible stance to a place of psychological flexibility that allows for choice, personal determination and healthy growth. This is a book to be read and referred to again and again.

I have been meaning to review this text, for sometime. I was fueled to do so, after using one of the many suggested exercises contained in the book with a client today. I have had moderate exposure to ACT in the past; this book is the perfect companion for therapists who wish to introduce ACT into their practice. The concepts are clearly explained throughout each chapter, the book does a great job of providing a mixture of theory and application. I highly recommend this book to providers and students. I have referenced it numerous times and consider it a core text in my collection.

Okay, where do I begin? Do you like to see a tried and true theory totally revised and updated to reflect the latest in evidenced-based practice? Do you like to feel like the author is speaking intimately to you instead of going on and on about his/her techniques and orientation? Do you want to learn how to apply a different approach to your current clinical ideas to help your clients who aren't responding? Do you think a person's values can motivate them? Then this is the book for you.
It's hard to put down because you quickly learn that every chapter has an intriguing new take on how to deliver psychotherapy--and every now and then you find a hilarious anecdote that not only rewards and relaxes you, but makes you think more deeply. This book is not a chore to read, it's an adventure in discovery.
I've met one of the authors and been to his presentation, but this Acceptance and Commitment Therapy needs to be studied for the student or clinician to be able to fully appreciate its principles. The behavioral stuff, for once, comes alive and is actually understandable---and better yet, is applied to verbal self-talk and private cognitive events. This book is truly a Rosetta Stone for understanding how to work with the private verbal talk that interfere with your clients' therapeutic breakthroughs. These two authors make the Third Wave of Behaviorism an interesting and exciting new frontier. They have managed to completely re-invigorate my ideas on behavioral theory and techniques, but more importantly, their work can be applied to different orientations.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in Practice is a way to conceptualize your cases and develop treatment plans that don't ignore your client's thoughts, feelings, and values. The authors have developed a book that reviews the three waves of behaviorism, places them in a model that promotes psychological flexibility, and extends the theory to a cutting edge tool for all clinicians to use in every orientation. When you are finished with the book, you are left with the desire to learn more about the topic and you are eager to try out the ideas in your practice. Reading this book also helps you understand yourself a little better and your own private verbal events, so you get more than your money's worth. I heartily recommend this book for both students and practicing clinicians.

I've been receiving training in ACT for several years and am familiar with the small library of ACT books available right now. This one is my favorite - it's a very readable and yet thorough guide. ACT principles and techniques are nicely blended with a presentation of theory and philosophy - and it is done in a way that is accessible to those who are relatively unfamiliar with behavior analysis. I wish I'd had acess to this book during graduate school! This is the perfect resource for anyone who has just begun to explore this therapy and its theoretical and philosophical background.
